When I initially heard Time Flies When You’re Having Fun I thought I had made a mistake, the tones were so dulcet and smooth that I was certain it was Diana Krall crooning about unrequited love  and heartbreak. I’m still shocked; singer, songwriter extraordinaire Smokey Robinson is at it again. Smokey Robinson, thank you for taking me back to that by gone era when people actually had talent. If it’s true that Time Flies When You’re Having Fun then God can I please have some of whatever Smokey Robinson has been having for the last 50 years?

Smokey’s (and I hope you don’t mind my familiarity) album features eleven original ballads. I don’t particularly care if you don’t like R&B but when a living legend and musical powerhouse sings you have to give credence to their particular genre. Who else but Smokey could feature Carlos Santana, India Arie and Joss Stone on one delightful album? Possibly the most perfectly executed romantic soul album of the year and many more to come, Smokey Robinson’s Time Flies When You’re Having Fun is available August 25th.
