Feel like spending an exorbitant amount of money to acquire a piece of Michael Jackson memorabilia? If you have the money, you’re in luck because a 1984 portrait of the late King of Pop by Andy Warhol is set to go on auction at the O2 Arena.
Commissioned to celebrate the phenomenal success of Jackson’s 6th studio album - Thriller commemorates what is still considered as the best-selling album of all time. At it’s peak, Thriller sold over a million copies per week and eventually over 110 million copies were sold worldwide.
Acting on behalf of the seller, Janet Lehr- co-owner of the Vered Gallery in East Hampton, released the following statement:
The portrait was painted at the height of their careers and is a celebration of two of the great talents in global cultural history. BBC
The portrait which was initially acquired weeks ago for $300,000 is rumored to have an opening bid of $10 million. It goes without saying that the auction will set record figures as a previous portrait of Elizabeth Taylor was sold for $23.7 million in 2007. Prospective buyers are required to register with the gallery to bid via e-mail, telephone or in person. The auction closes Aug. 18th.
