I’m not scared to admit it- I’ve been waiting eagerly for nearly a year for Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince. In fact, I spent most of that period muttering curses to the studio heads who felt it appropriate to delay its release. Anyway, now that I have established myself as a sci-fi and fantasy freak we can proceed to the review at hand.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince premiered yesterday in London to positive reviews! A friend in attendance informed me that this was a Hogwarts that was considerably different from the ones in previous films. Hogwarts reflects the darkness that Voldemort’s presence heralds; there is a sense of foreboding that permeates the entire movie. Think more of the witches of Macbeth cackling “Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble” and then you have an apt picture of what you’re in for. Director David Yates, sets an incredible stage for the epic battle that is looming on the horizon.

Despite the impending gloom, Harry, Ron, Hermione are back but are infinitely more mature - translation: they’re all hot and bothered. One thing that I always appreciated about the Harry Potter series was the development of the characters as they aged on screen. In comparison to the other films, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince is a steamy emotional and dark romp through London.

The only complaints with the movie are that it is rather long (it better be after having to wait so long for the bloody film) and that the screenplay adaptation differs considerably from the book. If you’re an avid fan you are certain to notice these deletions but at the same time new scenarios are introduced which make up for it. Watch out for Tom Felton/Draco Malfoy, Alan Rickman/ Snape, Rupert Grint/Ron Weasley and Jim Broadbent/Horace Slughorn and Helena Bonham Carter/ Bellatrix Lestrange who all give stellar performances.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince opens worldwide on 07/15/2009
