With a title like Meet the Meatbats, I believe my apprehension was warranted but boy was I proved wrong, I was more than pleasantly surprised! First off, these guys aren’t just some dilettantes making noise, they’re consummate professionals who you already know and probably love. The Meatbats consist of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Cosmosquad guitarist Jeff Kollman, Unkle Kracker bassist Kevin Chown and keyboardist Ed Roth. Got your attention yet?
That said, I shouldn’t even have to mention how good the band is! You know how sometimes rock tends to get monotonous when there are no lyrics? Well, in this case the absence of lyrics is replaced by some really groovy, foot thumping, finger snapping instruments. Meet The Meatbats is categorized as rock but is best described as highly funky jazz- very reminiscent of Sly and the Family Stone. At times gritty but also featuring some delicate melodies such as Lola and Night Sweats, I’m sold. Chad Smith’s Meet The Meatbats is an unapologetic and uncompromising jam session which is so worth owning. Meet The Meatbats is available 09/15/2009.
